Rotary Fellowships Month

President Wayne Brewer

Greetings Members,
I trust everyone enjoyed the first Kings Birthday Weekend.

Colin Wilson - it was with much sadness that we learnt last week of the passing of Colin Wilson, a very long standing Member of 40 years and Past President - deciding as president he would have the Rotary year start 1 January rather than 1 July as Evanston dictates, which lead to some interesting challenges. Colin was very loyal to the Club and participated fully in a number of major projects, most notably "Williams Challenge" raising awareness and funds for Child Diabetes research. In June 1991 the club received the Presidential Award of Honour in the youth category for the project - Remuera was selected from 25,000 clubs worldwide. Colin and Dawn travelled to the Rotary International Convention in Mexico City to receive the awardSincere Condolences to Dawn and family. Colin's Funeral will be held on Friday June 23rd. Time and venue to be advised

Last weeks speaker, Anthony Grant, introduced by Iain Valentine, is creator and owner of the Matakana art and sculpture galleries, Sculptureum. Anthony gave a fascinating insight into aspects of his collection. For instance, adding colour to the mounts of certain works can enhance the visual appeal for display purposes. Anthony showed slides of Andy Warhol works of famous people to demonstrate how his theory works. Peter Salmon gave the vote of thanks on behalf of 38 Members and Guests in attendance.

Sculptureum Visit? With the exhibits constantly changing, it has been suggested another fellowship visit for Members could be arranged with transport by carpooling. If you are interested in such an event, please email me.

Roy Austin - Honorary Life Member - after a prolonged period in hospital it was a great surprise  and joy to many to see Roy attending Rotary last week. It was my pleasure to announce Roy had been granted Honorary Life Membership of Remuera Rotary to which those in attendance gave Roy a standing ovation. Roy is residing in the Memory loss unit at Rawhiti Estate in Rangitoto Ave, Remuera, visitors welcome.

Sir Bob's Memoirs,  Lady Betsy kindly gifted a copy of Bob's Memoirs to the Club. A fascinating read of the extraordinary life and achievements of  the late Sir Bob Elliott and charter Member of Remuera Rotary. The book will be available for Members to read and pass on.

MUNA, Model United Nations Assembly - Bryan Haggitt, an event Judge, reported on the success of MUNA at Auckland Girls Grammar recently - see further detail below.

Sergeant John Cowan raised $115,50 for the Sunshine Fund,  Well done John and thank you to all who contributed, for your generosity.

Next Week's Speaker, Sean Marston - Nepal.  As a fundraiser Sean is collecting foreign currency. Please clear out your drawers and bring along unwanted notes (and coins) to assist his cause - see further detail below.

ROTARY FELLOWSHIP TOUR to India with AG Joyti Singh, February 2024.  Please contact Joyti directly joytisingh@xtra.co.nz if you are interested and require further information or a copy of the proposed Itinerary or email me.

JOINT FUNDRAISER with Auckland East to raise funds for a Paediatric shower hoist for Starship. This joint venture will take place in September at a venue to be advised. in the meantime we are seeking contributions of  bottles to be Auctioned. Could be alcohol or olive oil, anything that has a twist and likely to sell at a premium. So far we have bottles signed by Chris Hipkins, Chris Luxon, David Seymour and others. Donations and ideas welcome.

CHANGEOVER  MONDAY JULY 3rd, 6.30 for 7pm at Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club $65.00 pp Dinner ( Special Menu) and drink on arrival. Family and Guests welcome book online in the usual way or email me.

All the best to everyone and we look forward to another interesting meeting next week.
Warm Regards,
Wayne

Please check - thanks for the invite to come to speak at the Remuera Rotary Club on June 12. I am looking forward to sharing. One fundraising project we have is called ‘Notes For Nepal’ where we ask people to bring along any New Zealand or foreign notes or coins they may have (new or old) and donate them to INF and the money raised from these goes towards our medical work. If you are open to promote this at your club before I speak with the idea that people bring their unwanted notes or currency on the night, then that would be appreciated. I find it an easy and non-threatening way to raise funds because for most people they just have the notes or coins sitting in a drawer not being used and so it doesn’t cost people anything to support our medical work.
