 President Leigh Marshall

There was a great attendance last Monday to hear Mayoral candidate Wayne Brown, and I hoped you enjoyed his presentation. Maybe you would like to hear Leo Molloy as well – let me know. It is a chance to put a face to the names so when we come to vote in the local body elections we are a bit more educated about the choices we have to make from a multitude of candidates.

I speak on behalf of the Club when I say a special thanks to Wayne for stepping up to replace Ross as President-Elect, and I know you will all support him as he seeks to appoint Club Officers in the coming weeks. Changeover will be at the Selwyn Library on Monday 4 July, so please make a note of the date.

Also, a reminder to check Remoirs for your duties each week, and organise a stand-in if you are not attending. See you all next Monday, when I am sure our guest speaker will have some challenges to your logic!

President Leigh

Guest Speaker 9th May 2022
Wayne Brown - Mayoral Candidate
'Let's Fix Auckland Together'

Wayne is campaigning for a better future for Auckland.  The Auckland area runs from Wellsford to Pukekohe.

Wayne explained that Rodney Hyde's Super City plan has not worked.  There has been a 'telephone book' of plans but only a handful of completed projects.

Wayne outlined the five point plan of his campaign:

'1.  Fix Auckland's Infrastructure:
Auckland's aging infrastructure is groaning under the pressure of growth.  Big expensive projects are behind time and well over budget.  As an example, the Dome Valley project has been under construction for 10 years.
Let's finish what we have started before launching yet more endless plans.

2.  Stop Wasting Money
Auckland Council and its CCO's are top heavy with overpaid managers who waste ratepayers money everywhere and this must be reined in.

3.  Take Back Control of Council Organisations

Auckland Transport is a huge bureaucratic monster that needs to be focused on transport only.

Watercare is a simple engineering business that needs to concentrate on reliable water and sewerage projects only.

Ports of Auckland occupy $6 billion of prime waterfront land.  They must start making real returns for ratepayers.

Panuku and Auckland Unlimited are expensive organisations that need to deliver for ratepayers or be shut down.

4.  Get Auckland Moving
We need to harness technology to get traffic moving around faster.  Complete the busways and optimise our transport networks to get Aucklanders moving.

5.  Make The Most of our Harbour and Environment
Auckland is a great place to live. we need to make the most of our beautiful harbour and the environment we live in.
We need to act now to deliver the future we deserve.'

The Auckland City Mayoral election is 'First Past The Post.'

The Mayoral elections closes on Saturday 8th October 2022.  Elections are by postal vote.

Everyone on the electoral roll will be sent an enrolment update pack in the mail in the first week of July 2022.

When you receive your pack, check your details are correct, including your address.  If they are incorrect, update your details by 12th August.  You can update your details online or make the changes on the form in your update pack, sign it and send it back.

If you don't receive an enrolment pack in the first week of July, it means you are not enrolled or your details are not up to date.

You can enrol or update online via the Electoral Commission website vote.nz
or phone 0800 36 76 56.

Voting packs will be sent out from Friday 16th September and voting closes on Saturday 8th October at 12 noon.

Special Guest - Ashwini Sadhu
It was nice to have our Assistant Governor, Ashwini at our last meeting.  Ashwini is from the Rotary Club of Auckland Harbourside and is also the Membership Programme Chair for our District 9920.

District Changeover will be on Sunday 3rd July at 9am.  the venue is still to be confirmed but may be at Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club.

President Elect Wayne Brewer
As  advised to Members earlier in the week, Wayne Brewer has been appointed President Elect by the Board effective immediately.

This only gives Wayne 7 weeks to appoint new Directors and Committees. The Board noted that in Rotary, Committees and Directors should rotate annually.

If you haven't already done so, please communicate to Wayne as soon as possible, which Committee you would like to serve on and if you are willing to be a Director.

Committees to be appointed for the 2022/23 year are:

Membership,
Youth,
International,
Vocational,
Community,
Ways and Means.

Other positions available are:

Fellowship,

Sergeant,
Bulletin Editor,
Programme (Speakers)

If you would like to discuss or have any questions please phone Wayne.
