Youth Service Month

President Wayne Brewer

This week 30 Members and Guests attended our regular Meeting and Guest Speaker Bishop Ross Bay as always did not disappoint. President Elect Bryan introduced Ross and "The life of a Bishop Between Sundays" was enlightening to say the least. No he does not report to The Bishop Of Canterbury and no he is not invited to the Coronation - not enough space in Westminster Abbey for the 850 Anglican Bishops scattered throughout the World. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland is responsible for all the Clergy and Parishes throughout Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel and he is a Trustee of numerous Trusts, Schools, the City Mission and institutions administered by the Church in the Diocese. Norman Johnston proposed the vote of thanks.

New Member talk Ivy Thomson. At very short notice Ivy stepped up to give her inaugural speech to the Club describing her very challenging upbringing in the Philippines, educating herself, rising above poverty and overcoming challenges from the age of 5 on a daily basis. Members were left moved by Ivy's heartfelt address and one couldn't help but admire Ivy's sincere commitment and positive attitude to life. We are very fortunate to have Ivy engaging in Remuera Rotary.

Salvation Army food packing. This week, John Cowan, Leigh Marshall, John Simpson, Pam Worth , Iain Valentine and myself assisted with the packing of 500 food parcels, Thank you all for a great effort.

Almoners Update. Roy Austin remains in the Awatea Ward level 14 Auckland Hospital, visitors welcome but please contact Janet first. Likewise Colin Wilson is in care in Shalom Court, St Johns Rd, please contact Dawn Wilson or Niel Ewart to arrange a visit.

Business is Awesome. Leigh Marshall advised that due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather and Teachers strikes the programme has been postponed until next year. Very disappointing but Leigh is determined to get this great Vocational Conference  for year 13 students  underway next year.

Sergeant John raised nearly $100.00 for the Sunshine Fund, There will not be a Sergeants Session next Monday.

Meal Charge increase. Please be advised that the weekly meal charge will increase to $32.00 as from 1st June due to the increase in food costs. This highlights the fact , as I pointed out at   this weeks meeting Members need to review monthly automatic payments to the Club to ensure Club accounts do not fall into arrears.
Thank you for your co operation.

Almoners further update - Don Hawke is recovering at home from heart surgery and expects to be back at Rotary in a few weeks.

Guest speaker next week, 8 May is Antonia Watson CEO of ANZ Bank. Members of Auckland East and Penrose Rotary Clubs, in addition to partners and guests will be in attendance.

Please indicate apologies and or guests via the website by noon Friday 5 May - final numbers to be confirmed by 11am Monday.

Note, additional parking will be available in the Rugby Club grounds next door in Puriri Drive - pedestrian access directly into the Bowling Club.

Enjoy the wonderful weather!! Have a great week,
Wayne.

The Cure Kids Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee recently completed an impact review of 10 funded studies, all of which reached completion and saw the submission of their final reports in 2022. The review revealed a number of studies to be of note in terms of their contribution and positive impact on child health, with one project of particular eminence headed up by Emeritus Professor Ed Mitchell, with his research on monitoring mortality and risk factors for Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI). The study builds on a long successful body of research for Professor Mitchell in relation to SUDI, and adds to the body of evidence that prevention of SUDI necessitates a holistic approach, rather than viewing factors in isolation.

Cure Kids has provided Ed with $98,120 over 18 months starting in 2021.

Cure Kids is tremendously proud to support this work towards preventing and reducing SUDI mortality.
