President Bryan Haggitt

To all Members, Supporters and Friends of Remuera Rotary:

Nick Sautner, CEO of Eden Park, spoke to us with considerable passion and dispelled a number of negative misconceptions relating to what should be our National Stadium.

Most notable was the belief that Eden Park owed Auckland City/ratepayers $50m - nothing of the sort! Back in 2011 Auckland City reneged on it's promise of $50m and, to ensure the Rugby World Cup went ahead Eden Park had to borrow the $50m from the ASB. Result is that Eden Park pays annually $15m in interest to the Bank.

Another - that the people around the Park are anti sporting, concerts and other events being held there. Wrong - surveys show that over 98% of local residents live close by because they want to be able to attend those events! Only a very tiny group of antis are against the Park. But they are the ones heard and concerts are restricted to just 6 per year and subject to very strict conditions.

For all that, Nick was extremely positive - he has introduced many money raising events including glamping and golf to the Park.  Nick answered many questions and will have dispelled any thoughts some might have had that the Waterfront would have been a better place for a stadium.

Nick's enthusiasm and drive was most evident and we wish him, and Eden Park, every success in overcoming present difficulties!

ROMAC - a youngster from PNG needing urgent medical treatment arrives late next week with family members. Unfortunately Wayne and Sharon Brewer will be away the weekend on the 18/19th November and I am totally committed to a cricket club reunion. Some members have offered help to Wayne and, anyone who could assist in helping this family orientate to Auckland, please contact Wayne on 0274 707 108.

DIRECTORS' MEETING Monday 12 November - a very short Meeting will be held at the Club following our Dinner Meeting
