RYLA Graduates
It was a pleasure to hear from our three 2021 RYLArians, sponsored by Rotary Remuera; Sonja Rose, Brooke Merrick and Luke O'Toole. Each shared a main takeaway and a snippet insight to their experiences from the annual week-long leadership camp https://www.ryla.co.nz/
“RYLA took us on a journey.” Sonja emphasised three main components from the camp. The great speakers, the physical and mental challenges, as well as the new people she met. Based on the functional leadership model theory where, “leadership does not rest with one person but rests on a set of behaviours by the group that gets things done;” Sonja’s reflection on the importance of what a good team member looks like, as well as what a good leader looks like, was great.
Prior to camp Brooke hadn’t thought too much about what leadership truly meant to her. RYLA changed that. Brooke’s recognition of the different types of leaders there could be was clearly a strong take away from her experience. Leadership comes in different shapes and forms and this became more evident to our RYLArians throughout the various workshops and challenges they faced.
The speaker that stood out to Luke the most was Alison Mooney. Luke learnt about different personality traits and how individuals often have a primary personality driver (the precise, the powerful, the peaceful or the playful). This was important in understanding how individuals functioned in different ways, giving Luke more confidence when leading a group; a new opportunity for him.
Each thanked Rotary Remuera for allowing them to participate in what was one of the most unforgettable experiences of their lives. While our 2021 RYLArians will continue to reflect and learn from their experiences, it was clear they had already learnt a lot about themselves as individuals and importantly about the virtues of being a good leader.
The club was also addressed by Ariana, Grace, Lukey (past RYLArians and team leaders at RYLA) and Scott (2021 RYLArian). The four each shared the impact RYLA had and what they have carried on to achieve in areas of leadership since.
Ariana not only helps out with RYLA but also RYPEN (Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment). It was exciting to hear that a second RYPEN is being arranged in the coming year, creating even more opportunity for young people to be empowered. RYPEN (like RYLA) emphasises working collectively, takes a holistic view on leadership and teaches both life and adult skills.
Grace emphasised how the RYLA and RYPEN programmes work and that there are not many opportunities like these. She hopes to pass the baton on and motivate youth to have a positive effect on their communities.
The presentation was closed out by a video compilation of RYLA 2021. In closing, Peter Ross (Chairman of RYLA District Committee) said he did not need to say much more, as we could all see the leaders that our 7 visiting RYLArians were growing to become.
Old Laptops, Tablets or I-Pads Needed Please
Thank you to those who have donated to this Project. We are still looking for contributions to contribute to this Project.
This project which has been introduced by Ian Willetts, the President of the Rotary Club of Auckland East (Inc).
The Fiji Covid crisis has escalated the issue of many school girls and young mothers not being able to maintain their education - so critical in Fiji.
Michelle Dickinson (known as Nano girl), is involved with a Trust to provide used laptops, which help this education objective. www.graduatewomen.fiji
Michelle is urgently seeking up to 40 used laptops, I-pads and Tablets. A cluster club project is under way, following a discussion with Michelle at the RYLA dinner. The Cluster includes the Rotary Club of Auckland East, the Rotary Club of Pakuranga and the Rotary Club of Remuera.
If you have a Laptop, I-Pad or Tablet, which you are able to contribute to this Project, please bring this to one of our next Club meeting. It would be great if our Club could make a contribution of some laptops to this very worthwhile project.
Our sister clubs in Fiji will be associated with the presentations of these laptops.

Salvation Army Food Packing
The Rotary Club of Remuera in conjunction with Newmarket Club will undertake Salvation Army food packing on the first Wednesday of each month. We require a minimum of 4 volunteers and a maximum of 6 each month from Remuera Club. The dates are:
August 4 - No more volunteers required
September 1 - looking for 1 more volunteer
October 6 - looking for 3 more volunteers
November 3 - looking for 3 more volunteers
December 1 - looking for 4 more volunteers
If you would like to volunteer please add your name to your available dates, and email back to Ed. Mitchell - edmitch@orcon.net.nz.
For each date Ed. will take the first 6 and the later ones will be reserves. So get you bid in early!!

Tree Planting at Motuihe - Sunday, 8th August
The next tree planting day at Motuihe is on Sunday 8th August. It would be great to see a good number of members being able to attend. This opportunity is also open to family and friends.

St. Aidan's Church Annual Quiz

We have entered a team in the St. Aidan's annual quiz being held on Friday evening, 6th August at St. Aidan's. We are allowed a maximum team size of 8. Fellowship Walk -
Waiatarua Reserve - 15th August at 9.30am
Organised by Ed. Mitchell
Suggested parking: Nr Men's Shed, Abbotts Way or in Abbotts Way itself.
This is a circular 2.7k flat walk (my app says there is a total 40m altitude gain), therefore it is suitable for all. The track is well maintained hard gravel.
Coffee will be at Remuera Golf Club
This will occur whatever the weather. Remember there's no bad weather, only bad clothes.
Crate Party - Friday, 20th August
Murray Weatherston has organised our first Fellowship event for the year with details as follows:
Put Friday 20 August [6.30pm until late] in your Diary.
This will be held at the Haggitts, Lucerne Road. Will finalise details closer to the day but likely to take the course of least resistance and have pizzas again, Jenny will provide pre dinner snacks (we will fund these as no host should be out-of-pocket)- $10 per head for entry, a bottle for a couple and a bottle for every second single (figure out for yourself whether you are a first or a second if you are a single). The cash will be officiously enforced, but you are responsible for unchecked self-compliance for the refreshments.
We already have an offer for the second crate party in November. But we’re looking for a host or hosts for first half of 2022.
Partners Evening and Invitation to Rotary Club of St. John's - Monday 30th August
As we heard from the RYLA graduates at our last meeting, one of the stand out Speakers was Allison Mooney.
We are extremely fortunate to be having Allison as our Guest Speaker on Monday 30th August. Allison is an International Speaker.
People who know or have heard a presentation from Allison before have commented that we are extremely fortunate to have secured Allison to be our Guest Speaker.
This is a fantastic opportunity to invite family members and friends who you have thought about bringing to a Rotary meeting. Also, please consider people who you think might be wanting to find out more Rotary and what we do. This is a great membership awareness opportunity for our Club.
