Leigh Marshall's Message
Last Meeting - Monday 28th September 2026
Greg Fleming, the National Party MP for the Maungakiekie electorate was our speaker at the Club meeting on 28 September. Greg is married with 5 children - he was born in Masterton, attended Wairarapa College and did a B.Com at Victoria University. He worked for various christian-based charities and also the conservative Maxim Institute.
Elected to the seat in 2023 with a 4000-odd majority, he is now busy in door-knocking mode around the electorate, which he sees as possibly marginal because of the inclusion of areas of Panmure in the boundary. As an MP, he has come to understand the difference he can make in the lives of individuals, and he gave us several examples.
He is glad a younger version of himself did not go into politics, and feels he has now much more lived experience. As a conservative and a small-government person, he expressed a love for doing electorate work and community service, but with considered change.
He had not been long in Parliament when he picked up a private members bill to do with the offence of modern slavery, and with the support of charities and social justice groups, hopes to see it become law in the new term of government.
He agrees Parliament needs reform, after a passionate plea was made by one of our members. We also wish Greg well in the election on Nov 9.
Our speaker next Monday, Dennis Walker, will tell us about the Bill Boyd Trust, and we will also share information about our own Charitable Trust.
There will be a RCR Board meeting after the Club meeting on Monday 5th October.

Passing of David Hunt
At our Club Meeting on Monday, we paused for a minute of silence to honour the passing of our long‑standing member, David Hunt. David’s commitment to Rotary spanned more than forty years, and his service, friendship, and dedication has been valued by us all.
A service to celebrate David’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 12 St. Vincent Avenue, Remuera, on Saturday, 10 October at 2pm.
Vivaldi Musical Showcase
Following on from our last Musical Showcase, we are preparing for our upcoming Vivaldi Musical Showcase, featuring exceptionally talented young musicians performing a vibrant selection of Vivaldi’s works. This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate youth achievement, support musical excellence, and strengthen our Rotary presence in the community.
To ensure the success of this showcase, we kindly ask for your support in promoting the event and assisting with ticket sales. Your involvement—whether by sharing the event with friends and colleagues, distributing posters, or helping sell tickets within your networks—will make a significant difference in reaching a wider audience. Wayne will have flyers available at our meeting on Monday.
Your encouragement and participation will help us to provide the opportunity for these young performers to compete in competitions throughout New Zealand.
Together, we can make this showcase an inspiring and memorable event.
