Meeting - Monday 15th September
Speaker: Niamh McMahon, Hon. Consul general for Ireland
We were privileged to have Niamh (pronounced Neave) address us last Monday. A senior partner in the firm McMahon, Butterworth, Thompson Lawyers, Niamh had spoken to us previously, some years ago, at the Remuera Bowling Club.
A most interesting address - as she explained, Ireland's economy is now "Rock Star" and not New Zealand's despite both countries being islands with similar populations. Both have populations of just over 5 million but NZ is languishing whilst Ireland is booming. Niamh compared the various economic aspects of both countries and explained what is proving so successful for Ireland now and then made suggestions as to how NZ could right itself. Ireland's ability to manufacture goods for the European Community being a big plus whereas we remain so dependent on primary produce and need to change.
Thank you Niamh - a fascinating comparison of the two economies and a most timely look at how we in NZ need to improve!
Tiffany Crosbie, Auckland Council on "Adopt a Drain"
Following Niamh, Tiffany gave a short presentation on how to carry out Desley Simpson's suggestion that each of us should "Adopt a Drain". Margaret Voyce, of the Orakei Local Board, joined our meeting - a break from her electioneering, to give Tiffany and the project her support.
St. Aidan's Church Garage Sale
The annual Church Garage Sale was held last Friday evening and Saturday morning and was an overwhelming success - so many donated no longer wanted items and so many others paid money to give them new life! In all, the Church's takings totalled $36,000 - a massive take raised entirely by volunteer effort.
Many excellent books were donated and about one third sold - $1,800 worth. Those unsold were packed into 47 banana boxes and delivered to Maungakiekie Rotary Club who will add them to their stock for their 3 Day Book Fair in November. Maungakiekie RC will be looking for assistance at this Fair - it is always a joy to be working with books!
Tamaki Primary School - Duffy Books in Homes Role Model Assembly -Wednesday, 17th September
This event was postponed from 17th September to another date which is yet to be determined. The Role Model Assembly is well worth attending especially if you have not yet had the opportunity.
Next Meeting, Monday 22nd September - Guest Speaker Raewyn Peart (MNZM)
Raewyn Peart MNZM is a sailor, an author and an environmental lawyer. As policy director for the Environmental Defence Society, Raewyn is also a passionate advocate for ocean conservation and in particular the Hauraki Golf. Raewyn has recently published the book The Story of the Hauraki Gulf. "I hope that the stories in this book will prompt readers to recall their own special stories of the Hauraki Gulf and of other treasured locations. Because it is only if we remember our stories, if we tell our stories and if we act on them that we can ensure that our special places will endure." Raewyn Peart
Special Meeting - Monday 29th September
Speaker Hon David Seymour MP for Epsom and Deputy Prime minister
State of the Nation address and Q and A session.
David is flying up from Wellington especially to be our speaker. Maungakiekie Rotary have confirmed their attendance. The Remuera Business Community has been invited along with several other Clubs in the Central Auckland group.
The invitation to attend is open to all. Numbers attending to either Secretary Kay through Clubrunner or Co President Wayne by 4pm Friday 26th September.
Rylarians/Friends of Remuera Rotary - you are most welcome and to also, ask those questions that you have always wanted to ask.

Waitangi Weekend - Kawhia Kai Festival Saturday 7th February. Whale boat racing, Music, Kapa Haka Food stalls, market etc.
Overnight option at Sands of Kawhia Hotel or campervan freedom camping. Other activities Golf, Fishing, sightseeing Hot Water Beach plus more.
