President Wayne Brewer

Greetings,

This week 29 Members and Guests attended to hear a very comprehensive address by Victor Dieriks on Parkinson's. Introduced by Norman Johnston, Victor is a Senior Research Fellow for Anatomy and Medical Imaging at the faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at Auckland University. Parkinson's is the fastest growing chronic neurological disease affecting 10million people worldwide. There are many facets to Parkinson's Disease which also encompasses Alzheimers, Huntington and Motor Neuron disease. After many questions Pam Worth extended a warm vote of thanks.

Colin Wilson - it was very gratifying to see such a large turnout of Members attend Coins funeral last Friday. The family co ordinated a very sincere and warm remembrance service and many of us, who thought we knew Colin well after many years in Rotary learnt aspects of his full and successful life we had no idea about.
John Hawthorn - It was indeed a shock, directly after Colin's funeral to learn of the passing of John. Our last remaining charter Member, a very loyal Rotarian who rarely missed a  meeting for nearly 60 years in Rotary. Again another outstanding Remembrance Service with John's widow Barbara very impressively leading the family eulogies. Barbara read a poem she had written and published, concerning Alzheimers - outstanding - we will make it available for Members to read.

Kevin Tavir - our International Student who has gained UE is now planning his tertiary education hopefully in New Zealand. Kevin is interested in Health Sciences majoring in Psychology and Mental Health.  Any advice is welcome and any financial support should be directed through Treasurer Bruce Howe.

ROMAC - After the covid hiatus ROMAC is again accepting patients from Oceania and I am sure there will be opportunities coming up to support the team. Secretarial support is currently required and as District 9920 Representative please contact me for any information. Remuera Rotary has donated $3000.00 to ROMAC this Rotary year.

Sergeant Jim Bradley raised $121.50 for the Sunshine Fund this week. Thank you Jim and to everyone who contributed so generously.

Changeover. This coming Monday 3rd July at Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club 6.30 for 7pm. For catering purposes numbers attending are required by noon this Friday  please register Guests or apologies online or email me brewerws@xtra.co.nz.by noon Friday,

Have a great week and we look forward to excellent food, wine and fellowship at Changeover on Monday

Warm Regards
Wayne
From your President Elect:

I am very much looking forward to this coming Rotary year and that, by our efforts, we can make a difference, a very positive difference in the fields we have involvement.

Thank you Wayne for guiding us through this past year - I know that all the various Committees did well and that we had some outstanding speakers.

Wayne earlier reported back, after visiting Fiji, of the huge success of the Oxygen Project - of great benefit not only to the youngsters that the Project set out to assist but also older people, especially Covid sufferers.

A list of Office Bearers/Directors for 2023/24 is below after the Tamaki Primary message. I have left committees otherwise untouched - however, should anyone wish to change please let me know and and adjustments can be made.

Also a new Directorship - New Projects which Catherine Holden will head. Time for brainstorming - any ideas?? Thoughts/suggestions to Catherine or to me!!

I look forward to seeing you all on Monday evening at our Changeover Dinner.

Yours in Rotary
Bryan

Pam Garlick's plea to assist reading at West Tamaki Primary School

I am one of a small number helping the children with reading at West Tamaki Primary school. Robin Martin has joined us this year.  The school staff keep asking can we find more helpers as they see the difference the personal contact makes.
School reopens 19 July.

West Tamaki Primary School, Alamein Rd, off Tripoli Rd, really appreciate the one hour a week that volunteers spend with children helping them read.

As many do not speak English at home, school is their chance to learn to read and speak conversationally in English.

We check in at the front desk by 10 and go to a class room where the teacher will ask one child at a time to read a book to you.  11 am we leave.

Anyone is welcome to join our small team of volunteers who enjoy helping these lovely children.
