Last Monday’s Meeting

On Monday 2nd September, I welcomed Harry Delamare as a Guest at our meeting. Harry is currently a member of Rotary Club of Auckland East and is keen to enjoy our weekly meetings and to get to know us.

Our Guest Speaker was Paul Burns, the General Manager of the Graeme Dingle Foundation.  The vision of this Foundation is to make a better Auckland through our young people, to collaborate with our communities and help to build brighter futures for young Aucklanders.

Paul described the 4 programmes delivered by approximately 100 facilitators located in selected Auckland schools. Programmes are directed to individual growth and development, designed to build up levels of personal resilience and strength.

Next Meeting, 9th September: London Architecture

Epsom Lodge Breakfast - Saturday 14th September

Jim Holmes is looking for 5 people to help with cooking and serving breakfast at the Salvation Army's Epsom Lodge at 18 Margot Street, Epsom on Saturday 14th September starting at 7am.  Also, it would be great to have a few extra people as reserves in case someone is unavailable at the last minute.  Jim sent out an email on Wednesday 4th September with full details of arrangements for this breakfast which is a great opportunity to cook and serve breakfast and then chat to the residents.  Please contact Jim by email - jimholmes13@gmail.com or mobile phone - 021 814 167 to let him know if you would like to help at this very rewarding event.

Vege Plants for Survival Program

We learned from Peter Jollands about the “Veggies for Survival” program that Pakuranga RC are introducing to schools as part of the “climate-safe” education program that is “The Novara One Planet Project”.   You may wish to have a look at https://www.sail-world.com/news/250799/Novara-One-Planet-project-launches and https://www.times.co.nz/environment/goodbye-desk-hello-ice-breaking-yacht/.  The Dr Nigel Jollands referred to in the 2nd link is Peter Jollands’ son, and the impetus for Peter in getting the ”Veggies for Survival” project up and running.  With both a son and daughter involved in climate change research and action there is clearly a familial interest in this environmental area as well as a science background to the benefits. There is more information on The Novara One Planet project on facebook and Instagram.  (https://www.facebook.com/NovaraOnePlanet/  and https://www.instagram.com/novaraoneplanet/).

See also; https://www.coaching-at-work.com/2023/05/01/novara-voyage-documents-coastal-climate-change/ and https://www.futureearthcoasts.org/research_projects/novara-one-planet-climate-safe-remote-coastal-communities/

While the planting of vegetables part is similar to the Garden to Table program it is more focussed on understanding the role of plants in climate change and survival/being climate-safe than learning about what plants to eat and how to prepare them.  As a range of communities around Auckland and the rest of New Zealand are facing change due to coastal erosion and other climate change effects this may well strike a chord with school students.

As a Rotary promoted project it is something else you may wish to consider discussing with the contacts you are establishing/re-establishing/nurturing with the schools you are in contact with.
