Greetings one and all,
I hope everyone had the opportunity to enjoy a safe and stress free Easter weekend, despite the mixed bag of weather.
Last week our Guest Speaker Raewyn Peart, introduced by Peter Salmon spoke on the state of the Hauraki Gulf, most definitely the jewel in Auckland's Crown, or so it once was. We learned how the scallop beds have been closed due to their depleted state. Noxious foreign seaweeds are spreading and closed some anchorages. Snapper are dying due to starvation and the "big daddy's" are not good eating and should be left in the ocean as breeding stock. Crayfish are in such short supply should only be caught in pots, not by divers.
How can this sorry state of affairs be fixed? - by increasing Marine Reserves throughout the Gulf, already a proven concept in many locations such as Goat Island near Leigh. Plus of course other conservation measures such as catch size.

Next weeks speaker will be Felicity Goodyear-Smith on Abortion Law. Kevin will also address the Club on his experiences at The Rotary National Science & Technology Forum in January.
