Rotary Fellowships Month

President Wayne Brewer

Greetings,

Guest Speaker this week, Kevin Trenberth, accompanied by his wife Gayle, introduced by Norman Brookes, spoke on Climate Change - giving a very full explanation as to why we are experiencing extreme weather events at the moment due to climate change, caused by overheating, warm oceans and air pollution. Backed up by Scientific data, El Nino and La Nina weather patterns are adding to the weather changes and events. David McAuley gave a warm vote of thanks.

I couldn't help to be reminded that back in 1959 while boarding at Kings Prep a National Geographic editorial was published and robustly debated with our Science teacher. The editorial predicted that by the year 2000 there would be no oil left, the Ozone layer so damaged crops would wither and dye and Oceans, due to ice melt from the heat of the planet would rise 12 feet (Pre metric). Well that's what the Scientists said then, except now Politics is playing a major role in "climate change" - it used to be called Global Warming before Al Gore came along..

Colin Wilson's funeral next Friday 23rd June at 12 noon at Purewa. It would be great to see a good turnout of RC Remuera Members to pay tribute one of our longer serving senior members.

RYLA - all six Remuera candidates have been introduced to the Club by Youth Director Bryan Haggitt. This week we met Vincent O'Connell a teacher at Sacred Heart College in Glendowie. We will be hearing more from the candidates at  the RYLA debrief, July 24.

REMUERA ROTARY CHANGEOVER - Monday July 3 at Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club at 6.30 for 7pm - $67.00 per person for dinner and drink on arrival thereafter cash bar. Members are automatically booked on Clubrunner but Partners and Guests must be registered by noon Friday 30 June - likewise apologies to avoid being charged.

REMINDER. The cut off time for apologies for normal meetings is 11am Mondays.

Fundraiser.  We are combining with Auckland East to raise $15,000.00 for a pediatric shower  hoist for Starship. Auction items are requested in the form of a bottle of a great beverage - may be signed by a politician or some well known personality - to add value or simply a cash donation. A function will be held in September details TBA.

Kevin Tavir.  It is very rewarding to see our International Student continuing to achieve well. Last week Kevin collected two Awards for Excellence, one a medal, the other a certificate. He is still trying to find a pathway forward post Wesley and we would welcome any career or academic guidance or counselling. Immigration is also a challenge.

Sergeant Jim Bradley  raised $155.00 for the Sunshine Fund, well done Jim - thank you to everyone who contributed - 31 members and guests in attendance.

Next weeks speaker is Victor Dieriks on Parkinsonism.

Ailsa Wilson and the late Robin Wilson - Senior Members will recall past Club Member 80's/ 90's who retired to Warkworth some years ago. Ailsa was very instrumental in setting up Inner Wheel in Auckland, was a very active Inner Wheel Member, sadly died recently. Her Funeral is in Warkworth on Friday at mid day.

Directors Meeting - Monday 26 4.30 pm in the Carlton Boardroom with Committee Reports please.

All the best - we look forward to seeing everyone again next Monday.
Nga mihi, Wayne
