25 March 2024 Vol 45 No 30
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Month
President Bryan Haggitt
To all Members and Friends of Remuera Rotary:
START - our Speakers on Monday, Janelle Irvine and Dean Cook, on behalf of START, gave us a very sincere address highlighting the difficulties encountered by stutterers. START stands for the Stuttering Treatment and Research Trust and they explained the help they, a totally voluntary organisation, give to stutterers, especially children and young people. Recovered stutterers themselves, Janelle and Dean explained the mental anguish suffered by so many stutterers and of the bullying that they so often encounter when young. Intriguingly, as was explained during a lengthy and very frank question time, the affliction can often disappear when singing or when making a speech. The Club is assisting START by donating $1,000 to it - $250 from our Sunshine Fund and $750 from the Club's Trust.
LONDON INTERNATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM (LIYSF) - Clouds Poole, the Diocesan student who attended the NZ Forum in January and, with Vanessa Huang, gave us a debrief 2 weeks ago, will be attending this Forum in London. LIYSF is a 15 day live in Forum - from 24 July to 7 August, some 500 students from 70 countries will be attending. Not cheap - the fee is 3,095 pnds stg and Clouds and the several other NZ students will be having to fund this themselves as, unlike some years ago when 2 students were selected ear year and were fully sponsored, there is no selection process and no sponsorship now. One has to congratulate the NZ Forum team for having inspired these students to make this trip to London and to outlay this large expense. Furthermore, Mrs Kirsten Poole, Clouds' mother is to travel to London with them. Utterly splendid, a wonderful opportunity for these students and fantastic that New Zealand will be represented at LIYSF. The Club has agreed to contribute $1,000 towards Clouds' expenses.

Act now to have your say on Auckland Council’s
Long-term Plan
Our consultation on the council’s Long-term Plan closes next week, on Thursday 28 March 2024.
This year we’ve put together a plan to make do with what we have, while spending where it is needed most.
We’re looking to do things differently, and we want to hear from you about where we do more or less, faster or slower or do things more cheaply.
