Economic and Community Development Month

President Iain Valentine

Last Monday's Meeting -  Monday 30th at Sotheby’s.  Our speaker was Barney Koneferensi “Digital Infrastructure for Disability”  and was introduced by Ingrid Grieve.

Barney Koneferenisi is a Paralympian representing NZ in wheelchair rugby and a businessman. He spoke to us about his journey starting with contracting meningococcal disease, resulting in amputations of his right hand and legs.
He wants to create a reliable transport service for those who are within the disabled community, of which there are many. He is aiming to raise money to develop an app to enable people with disabilities, a connection to transport services (of which he has lined up).  He has achieved all the research, business plans, and costings and has undertaken PR on Breakfast show and several radio stations already, plus a 'give a little' page. He also has a lineup of PR ready to go in support of his endeavours.

Barney made a persuasive pitch for support. This could be a new project for the Club to get right behind Barney and help make it happen.  Please let a Board member know if you are interested in pursuing this.

Next Meeting: Monday 7th October at Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club

Iain Wakefield (the Jolly Doc) on the subject of General Duncan Cameron & the Waikato Invasion. Maungakiekie Rotary will be joining us for this meeting.

Iain lives in the house occupied by Gen Cameron - the oldest house in the Drury area - and has considerable interest in the General and has done a great deal of research on the subject. General Sir Duncan Alexander Cameron, GCB was a British Army officer who fought in the Crimean War and part of the New Zealand Wars. He was later a governor of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Born into a family with a military tradition, Cameron joined the British Army in 1825.

Our Bryan Haggitt is member of Clan Cameron NZ and because the Clan is also very interested in this subject, it's members have been invited to join us.
Because of larger numbers attending, please lodge your apology in the normal way before 1.30pm on Friday 4th October.
